Most high beasts don’t have weapons in their human shapes because they’d never consider fighting in a human shape- they’d just change back into a beast and use their teeth. Changing into a human is sort of a novelty for them. Bernard is from a house that specifically changes into humans often, and for a reason, so he was trained in how to use a weapon and fight in that shape.
Since Bernard’s promotion to Primus Pilus was not exactly because he was a good fighter or anything (he’s good, yes, but not Primus Pilus level good- more on this later >__>) the sword he wears was given to him so that he’d be able to match the power of the high beasts, who are considerably stronger than someone from a low house like himself.
